MEET THE DIRECTOR OF LINCOLN BAND
A Bay Area native, Mr. Gomez started playing clarinet at the age of 10. He learned saxophone in middle school and finally tuba in high school. He graduated from John Swett High School in the small East Bay town of Crockett. He spent two years at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill before transferring San Jose State University. He studied tuba with Tony Clements and conducting with Dr. Ed Harris. He performed in the wind ensemble, orchestra, Latin Jazz ensemble, brass ensemble and the SJSU Spartan Marching Band. He received his B.A. in music education and teaching credential from San Jose State University. He is currently a candidate for a Master of Music in conducting at Sam Houston State University & the American Band College. This intense summer program over three years includes advanced training on conducting, band literature and courses on playing all the instruments in a band program. Mr. Gomez spent one year at Burnett Middle School and one semester at San Jose High Academy. Before coming to Lincoln High School he spent 7 years at Overfelt High School. The program had just one band class of 35 students. In his years he has grown the program to nearly 70 students in two classes. He regularly took them to CMEA Festivals where they received high ratings and scores. He currently performs with the Ohlone Community Band in Fremont and, when a tubist is needed, with the Mission Chamber Orchestra. When not teaching or performing Mr. Gomez loves to travel, cook, attend baseball games, and works as a sports official.
The Lincoln High School Band Program is one of the preeminent instrumental music programs in the Bay Area. Lincoln Bands are open to all students currently enrolled at Abraham Lincoln High School, an Academic, Visual, and Performing Arts School. Lincoln offers a place for every student to make music regardless of prior musical experience. Beginners through advanced musicians, we have an experience appropriate ensemble for everyone. We offer 4 levels of Concert Band, 2 levels of Jazz Band, and the Lion Pride Pep Band. Students also have the opportunity to participate in the pit orchestra that performs for the two musicals that our theater department produces each year. Our bands have recorded at the studio in Skywalker Ranch; we’ve traveled to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Disneyland, Colorado, and this year we plan to travel to Washington, D.C. to participate in the National Memorial Day Parade. Our Lincoln High School Lion Pride Band performs at all home football games and puts on a stand-shaking, audience-pumping performance annually at the Big Bone Game, the longest running rivalry football game played on Thanksgiving Day this side of the Mississippi! The Jazz Band is the top ensemble in our Band Program. Requested at many venues throughout California, the Jazz Band can be found performing at The Tech Museum of San Jose, Pier 39 in San Francisco, Disneyland, the State of the Valley Conference hosted by Joint Venture, and our own Black Box Theater at Lincoln High School. They consistently receive the highest of ratings at festivals and competitions, last year earning a “Command Performance” designation at the Santa Cruz Jazz Festival. The Lincoln High School Band Program prides itself on being an inclusive, passionate, exciting, and artistic place for students to make music. Students learn a lifelong love and appreciation for music by performing together at a high level of excellence.
